Ubique | October 2021 Update

October was a bit of a tumbleweed month for the fund, with it taking no trades for its entirety.

This is due to the fact that one of our risk management overlays was triggered in September which meant we were not to put on any trades for the next 22 trading days. October is the second worse month historically speaking to be long the markets and to be able to survive, one must be extra cautious going into such volatile periods. That being said, the markets fully recovered from September's losses and if we had been long we would have captured a good deal of upside. Naturally, it's easy to look back with a 'would have, could have, should have' approach, but as we trade quantitatively, we will continue to see such things. The upside to this though, is that it has historically helped us avoid the absolute worst of times when the markets do collapse, which they have a tendency to do every now and then, and having the ability to survive complete meltdowns will inevitably result in false positives from time to time.

Putting all of this into the big picture, Ubique is up 24.88% on the year, compared to the S&P500 which is up 16.02% meaning that we are outperforming the markets quite considerably. At the end of Q2 we were up over 30%, with Q3 bringing up down by about six and a half percent, showing a reversion to the mean, as our CAGR sits around 20% after fees.

This 'downtime' over the last month has allowed us to focus our efforts on our R&D and although we have nothing we can announce just yet, we have made some serious strides towards developing a few additional strategies which we will be looking to introduce to the fund, once we have fully stress-tested them to see how they handle outlier circumstances. If they continue to hold up to scrutiny, then we may be able to announce and roll out these before the year is out. Stay tuned...

That is about it for this month, with no trading there isn't much to look back on to comment upon. Now Q3 started, we are now back in the markets with all our strategies and look to close off 2021 strong.
